This track is far from new, but it seems to gain popularity in the form of waves rolling towards the beach, but then leaving gradually. The recent wave, thanks to Jackmaster who over the years has kept playing the track here and there in his sets, happened end of last September. Jackmaster dubs it 'the tune of the week/month/year and the history of the universe'. But because this track keeps popping up every couple of years, it's not a track everybody has already heard. It's kind of a classic, but then again it's also something many people haven't heard yet. So we decided to share it.
Music sometimes has the ability to trigger a feeling of recognition, or sometimes it even brings back very specific memories. It kinda feels like coming home to a place where you've lived for many years. It feels like looking at old photographs of your childhood. Or meeting up with that one friend you haven't seen in years, but you guys still connect the same way you always did. When it happens you get warm fuzzy feelings and of course the dumb grin on your face that can be roughly translated to 'remember that moment when the thing happened, that was so awesome'.
'What's a Girl To Do' did this to a couple of us for some reason. Therefore we feel like maybe we've heard this tune before and to be even more precise; we think we heard it when we were young. It feels so familiar we can't help but think it was a soundtrack to some kids movie we liked. Or maybe because of the instruments used, and the repetitive melody, it's reminiscent of the 16-bit video games that we played back then. However, Fatima Yamaha, pseudonym of Bas Bron - Dutch producer of the infamous Dutch rap formation 'De Jeugd van Tegenwoordig' and the guy behind 'Bastian - You've Got My Love' - created this beautiful piece of tranquility in 2004. So did the producer base this track on an existing soundtrack from our youth? Or are our minds just playing tricks on us and have we never heard this tune at the age that this track reminds of us so much? Could it be that because a track reminds you of a period in your life, that your brain automatically connects the track to certain memories you already have? It definitely leaves us wondering which part of our associative memories is actually true, and which part might be created by music. But if you feel what we feel when you hear this track, you're going to have it on repeat for about an hour the first time you listen to it. - DW. & R.
